Il mio primo ciondolo Twinnlino - My first "Twinnlino" pendant

English version: see below

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hYgwGkTB3g

While my son was, for the first time, entrusted for the whole afternoon to his granny - dutifully equipped with a baby bottle of my milk, a portable changing set and everything needed to cope with any emergency -  yours truly finally allowed herself two full hours to attend a beading class at my "bead pusher" (I must say that the bead shop is just less than 5 mins' walk from my Mom's place - practically an annex!)

So this is the result of that "afternoon off": my first work with SuperDuo beads (very similar to Twin beads). These beads are more or less rhombus-shaped and feature two holes to pass the thread. Less fragile than Tila beads - featuring two holes as well, but square in shape - SuperDuo and Twin beads offer countless possibilities to create original designs. But I suppose you have understood that already if you are interested in beading, even as "end users" only!

Auguri Nonna! - Happy Birthday, Granny!

English version: see below.

Yesterday was my Mom's - well, the Little Precise One's neo-Granny's - birthday. Normally my mother doesn't wear false jewelry during the winter and prefers small earrings, therefore I tried to imitate real jewelry by choosing beads which could recall real pearls and a silver finding.

At first, I wanted to make a pair of earrings made with some Delica bead tubes worked in tubular peyote stitch, but suddenly I recalled the wonderful project by Sylvia Sucypto "Lily of the Valley Lariat", published in the Bead&Button issue #103, June 2011, pp. 33-35. The original project concerned a lariat featuring 30 lilies of the valley made with seed beads: I simply singled out the flower element to create something else. I recalled as well that my mother had seen the cover of that issue, featuring a photo of this same project, and was struck by it (also because the lily of the valley was my Grandad's favourite flower, and he had died quite young when my mother was still a little girl). I was now sure about what I wanted to make and, while taking breaks to change a dirty diaper, feed the baby and urgently wash his bodysuits, I managed to complete the earrings in 2-3 hours.

PS: the green colour of the Nymo thread is not a mistake: I wanted it to recall the colour of the stem.

Overdose da blog (altrui) - (Other people's) Blog overdose

Well, let's start with some updates. Today is the deadline for submitting my best work, the one which is not made with beads. The one I couldn't make a pdf tutorial of, even if I wanted to. The one whose pattern was not borrowed from another designer, but is mine, my husband's, all our ancestors' and Mother Nature's too, who decided to put some personal ingredient in order to surprise even my very experienced gynecologist ("Ma'am, women who were born severely underweight like yourself, normally give birth to underweight children. Your son comes as extraordinary to me!" Well, doc, there's a first time for everything, even for an accomplished scientist like you!). But this time the blame for my delay cannot be laid on me, since it's the work itself which decides when it is time to be submitted, unless the delay is longer than 12 days. And really, he doesn't seem very willing to come out, although in the late afternoon he usually starts rehearsing his evacuation plan, making me see even the Southern Hemisphere stars. He's not altogether wrong: this is not a beautiful world, but he will spend some nice time before finding himself face-to-face with the less nice aspects of what is "to be alive" - gratuitous intolerance,  for example, or to be judged on the basis of vague clues and without personally knowing the accuser. But that's another story.

Another update concerns a new entry in my feline world. I called him "Scroccocat" ("scroccare" in Italian means "to scrounge") because at first he found a way to my courtyard by following the smell of our bbq and I was sure he lived with a neighbouring family. In fact, he had been aiming at us (well, me) for quite a while, since he came up to our backdoor on the day of our house move, one and a half year ago. Then cat food found a way to his stomach. Then he found a way to my heart and I in his, since most of the times he doesn't touch food (ehm, well, at least not as soon as he sets paw inside my flat) and wants to stay close to me, to the point that once he even disdainfully left the house when my hubby came home form work. And finally, he found a way not only to my house, but to my sofa, to my veranda, to my pantry as well... And I'm really not so sure anymore about the fact that he "belongs" to the neighbours; he looks more like a very clean neighbourhood cat. And, as you can see from the picture below, he is one of the reasons why I haven't done much over the last few weeks.

Tutto era pronto per iniziare a riparare la collana, ma Scroccocat preferì la sedia della Precisina alla sua cuccia./ Everything was ready to begin repairing the necklace, but Scroccocat chose The Precise One's chair rather than his cat basket.

Perché non è venuta a me???"

Let's go back to the main subject of this post. Blog overdose. I follow many blogs, maybe too many, most of them concerning beading. The official reason is "it's a good source of  inspiration", but in fact the final result is that often other people's work puts a spell on me and I do nothing but exclaim "How cool!" "Such a good and simple idea! How come that I haven't had it myself?" "Ah, I must make this too! / Ah, I must learn to make this too!"... And then I realise that I don't have time to do everything and therefore become apathetic instead of beginning to make something to start with, at least. My husband, a comics addict, would probably quote The Joker, Batman's arch-enemy: "So much to do and so little time". I have no excuses: I use Google RSS Reader so I don't waste time visiting the blogs one by one. Instead, new posts appear automatically in a list just like new e-mails appear in an e-mail client. I strongly recommend using a RSS reader if you, like myself, follow many blogs; there are so many RSS readers to choose from.
But then, I'm REALLY exaggerating now. Either I stop looking at what other people make - besides the fact that I don't jot down any notes about interesting ideas and techniques - or I won't make anything anymore.

13.10

Papà ed io, marzo 1973 / Dad and me, March 1973

Did you happen to be curious about the name of this blog? Well, that's easy: 13/10 is my birth date... So, let's cancel that "almost" to "40-year-old".

Braccialetto tubolare - Tubular bangle

English version: see below.

This tubular bangle was made using seed beads and faceted rondelles, and based on a pattern courtesy of Monica. The pattern itself is just one of many existing variations of the tubular spiral; nonetheless, the network effect, which seems to contain the rondelles although the seed beads and the rondelles are worked at the same time and on the same level, gives a touch of originality to this work.

The original pattern did not feature a clasp but a connection between the beginning and the end of the bangle in order to make it look like one whole piece. I preferred to pass a piece of silver wire through the bangle, apply two end caps and attach a clasp in order to avoid the "hoop rolling" effect it would have otherwise made on my very thin wrist (thin even if compared to my - albeit small - hand).

Beaded beads

At last, a new work! With the return of the (relatively speaking) fresh weather, I started to feel like beading again. So, here are a pair of beaded beads for my "bead pusher" Sabrina to use as a sample. The pattern is by Cathy Lampole, "Crystal-caged pearls", taken from Bead & Button issue #93 (Oct 2009), pp. 26-28.

Parure Elisa

English version: see below.

Two more "old" works, one made in 2009, the other in 2011, for my cousin's birthday. I normally refer to this bracelet as "Maccheroni" (an Italian pasta quite different in shape from what is called Macaroni in the U.S.), since the peyote bead tubes made with Delica look like maccheroni. The earrings are an example of a happy mistake: in fact, the original project (I can't remember the designer, and I apologise for this) featured 6 Tilas, while I strung 7 by mistake, but IMHO the structure felt more solid and consistent in the end. I must apologise for the terrible picture of the earrings, too: it was taken in a hurry with artificial light just before rushing out to deliver the present.

Portachiavi di alcantara a macramè - Alcantara Macramè key ring

Portachiavi a fiore by brip72

Since I haven't made anything new yet, let me post something I did a few years ago: it's a key ring, created for my cousin Ilaria, using macramè knotting and alcantara. The big finger you see belongs to my late father who graciously offered himself as a living prop for the photo. You might also glimpse a guipure doily made by my Mom (see previous post).

A difesa del macramé - Speaking out for macramé

English version: see below.

E a quanto pare quei pizzi costano pure!

This is going to be a somewhat unpleasant, pedantic post, but I feel like I must write it (how could I have gained otherwise the hardly flattering nickname "the precise one" when I was an undergrad?)

I don't know whether the same thing is happening in the USA or in the UK (I doubt it!), but over the last few months here in Italy a certain brand of bracelets has become very fashionable and many famous people are wearing them (maybe that's why the bracelets have become fashionable, I'm afraid...). These bracelets consist of a stripe of machine-made nylon lace, similar to the kind of passementerie that you could buy in any haberdashery. Be warned, I'm partial since I don't like these bracelets at all: they're all right as long as you're a child, they're ok if you're a teenager, but they look simply ridiculous on an adult person's wrist. (hey, I told you I would be unpleasant!)

But, as an ancient Latin saying goes, "In matters of taste, there can be no disputes", and I conform accordingly.

In fact, I don't want to discuss the beauty of these bracelets here, but rather the fact that they are passed off as "macramé lace" and that many people believe this to to be the truth, even many "beading sisters" who are perhaps very well grounded on Swarovski and Miyuki, but not so much on knotting.

Well, I've got news for you: that's NOT macramé. It's nylon passementerie very likely produced in a Third-World country. Macramé proper is an ancient knotting technique (originally employed to repair fishing nets) made popular in the Mediterranean area by Genoese fishermen and based on less than 10 basic knots, combining which one can create many things ranging from pot-hangers to fibre jewelry. And "macramé lace" is something quite different: try google-searching "macramé fringes" in "Images" and you will see that it looks much more like filet crochet lace.

I concede that those bracelets MIGHT recall - and I hope not to irritate the merlettaie who passionately deal with these techniques - pillow lace, tatting (in my to-learn list), or guipure embroidery (which my Mom used to make when younger), but not macramé at all.

It was therefore sad for me to recently visit some street markets where fibre jewelry, made with nylon lace similar to that employed to make those bracelets, was passed off as macramé lace in absolute good faith and seriousness, precisely because of those bracelets' success. And apparently that lace is expensive too!

So I talked about that with my mother and, to my utter surprise, I found out that, before real macramé became fashionable in the '70s, that kind of passementerie was sold in haberdasheries with the trade name, albeit incorrect, of "macramé lace", so much that my mom herself was very surprised when she saw the look of real macramé for the first time in the '70s. Ok, but what could be excusable in the '50s and in the '60s cannot be easily forgiven now that macramé has become very popular again thanks to great artists who have updated it as compared to what it used to be in the '70s! Call it whatever you like, but at least you should know that that kind of lace is not macramé.

If you want to learn something more about macramé, check out these links. If you don't understand the texts, don't worry: in most cases the photos speak for themselves!

Rieccomi! - I'm back!

Avete capito? No? Altro indizio.

Ok, altro indizio.

Niente sole, poco mare.

Well, maybe I should tell you the reason why I have disappeared for months. The truth is, from the beginning of March to the end of May I started to fall asleep even at 9pm, whatever the place. Appetite, most of all in the evening, was missing and often, in the afternoon, only to think about food was disgusting. Understood? No? More clues coming.

I wanted to resume living normally in June because I felt much better but alas, in the middle of the first summer heatwave, I was sent straight away home from work. Did you get that? NO, I wasn't fired! (that would be the last drop). Ok, one more clue.

Sunbathing forbidden, just a little swimming. Almost no holidays away. Singing lessons had to be  suddenly interrupted, just like gym sessions (and anyway, I had already suspended them myself since March, but I counted on resuming at a slower pace in June). I gained about 12 lbs, all around my waist, while the rest of my body has remained the same... Thaaaat's correct, I'm expecting a child by the end of November (a baby boy)! Unfortunately mine is an at-risk pregnancy because my placenta is too low. So here I am on an early maternity leave, trying to get some rest in spite of my low tolerance of heat waves and of my being a workaholic. The next person who says "enjoy your pregnancy!" is getting a punch on his/her nose! Mind you, I know there are women out there who have been much more ill and more at risk than myself, but the first month of my maternity leave was a torture and, moreover, I couldn't help thinking about the very realistic possibility of spending the last 3 months of my pregnancy in bed (apparently that won't be necessary, phew).

In all this, I got the classic "artist's block". But I hope to make up for it soon!

Orecchini "Twinkling Star"

I'm still alive... just one of those times when you prefer sleeping to beading when you have a free evening! Only a request from a friend could wake me up from my lethargy, and so here are Esther Zadock's Twinkling Star Earrings, a project from the book Creative Crochet Jewelry - the same book from which I took inspiration to create the necklace Trine di metallo. To be more precise, these earrings are going to be given to the same girl who received the necklace, and therefore have been designed to match it.

Uncinetto: 1,0

I've employed 28-gauge colored copper wire instead of the metallic thread used by Ms. Zadock; multicolor seed beads instead of turquoise; I concealed the center of the work (it was a bit messy) with two rows of beads, and finally I hanged the two flowers from the earring posts instead of glueing them. As you can see, the result is quite different from what you can see in the book! Crochet hook size: Metric 1,0, USA 10, UK 4

Seconda avventura in 3D
